Bukit Jelutong braces for High-Speed Broadband
Bukit Jelutong has been selected as one of the four pilot areas in the country for the roll-out of High-Speed Broadband by Telekom Malaysia. How fast? How about in excess of 15Mbps ? Streamyx is now 2Mbps, at best. Before you start buying boxloads of new hardisk, the service will only start around mid 2010, but the infrastructure is being laid down right now.
The service also claims to provide IPTV, and static IP, which is useful for security cameras. This is possible because of the utilisation of fiber optic cable right into your home. Eventually the phone copper ine will be replaced by fiber. Don't get me wrong, I don't work for Telekom (and probably never will, anyways) but the service is beneficial for individuals and the community as a whole, especially the security part.
What Telekom is doing right now is laying the infrastructure. According to Telekom, they have completed 40% of the work to be done in Bukit Jelutong. The infrastructure includes (I know you were waiting for this..), installing a "mini-missile-launcher" looking thingamagick contraption. This "whatever-it-is-called", pedestal if I'm not mistaken, will connect up to 8 houses. Telekom will use the existing telecommunication ducting to pull cables and install these "launchers".
Now, most houses in Bukit Jelutong have their telecoms ducting behind the houses along the back alley. Residents in these areas do not even realise the existence of these "launchers". In Jalan Kubah, however, the ducting is in front of their houses. Ductings are constructed by the housing developer. Therefore, residents in Kubah unfortunately have these "launchers" staring at them. The pictures below speak a thousand words.

For residents, specially in Jalan Kubah, who are not comfortable with the box in front of their houses, Telekom has offered to manouver these existing boxes to a slightly different location. However, since the installation of these boxes are dependant on the ducting, some may be impossible to relocate. If you would like to request for relocation of these "friendly missile-launchers", click here to send an email to BJRA.
For those who would like to know more about the High Speed Broadband, click here to go to the Telekom High Speed Broadband site. Bukit Jelutong is included under "Lapangan Terbang Subang". Beats me.
Let's hope the project goes smoothly and we can use the services for the benefit of the community...as long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Comments
So much for their ongoing promotion of free Unifi service until July if you subscribe now.
Is 2mbps the speed at best because they told me 4mbps is available (which is usually a lie) Would appreciate some feedback on the speed as it would be pointless for me to pay for 4mbps if it's only going to be a 2mbps speed.
